The main objective of every website is to rank as high as possible on the search engines when people search for products or services with the related keywords. The key to higher ranking is in understanding the factors which influence the search engine ranking, so that you can focus your efforts on improving them…this is SEO.

There are two main factors that influence the positioning of your website in search engine rankings; these are on-page and off-page factors. The on-page factors which directly influence your website are factors that are hosted on your domain server these are, Content, Meta Tags and Header Tags.  The off-page factors are the issues that have effect from external sources and influence your rankings such as, mainly links and their popularity.

Things you can do to improve search engines rankings

Quality Content, Page Titles and Meta Tags are the three major factors which influence your website ranking within search engine results pages (SERPS).  Whilst these factors are high in their priority, they cannot influence your position on the own, they really need to be accompanied by continuous and frequent webpage improvements which, in turn, encourage frequent indexing by the spiders;

These Constant and Necessary Improvements (CaNI) must be carried out taking into consideration the following cocktail of influences…

• Effective use of Targeted Keywords in the Content: This is possibly the most important part of setting p a website, it is the foundation upon which your business firmly sits.  Lengthy research for the long-tail keywords that users frequently type in the search engines to find sites promoting similar products and services to yours. Use these targeted Keywords in the Content of your pages, within the Title and within the Meta description tag. Take care not to over-use Keywords in these areas as they can also result in penalties which will affect your ranking negatively. • Get High Value Links: The efficient way to determine High Value Links is to install Google Toolbar and use the Google’s Page Rank to determine link value. A high volume of High Value Links can lead to better search engine popularity. It is usually more effective to have fewer high page ranking sites linking to you rather than many irrelevant and low ranking in bound links.  However it is fair to say that a site receiving 8000 low PR inbound links can feature higher in SERPS than a site receiving 300 high PR inbound links.  Even then there are other factors which can influence the 8000 weighting favour against sites with say 5000 higher PR inbounds. (confusing hey?)

• Relevant Value Added Content: Frequently amending relevant value added content for your website is a great way to attract indexing from the search engines. This can also include articles, blogs, news, and other relevant tools to your business or industry. If your site has 100 pages of good quality content then there is a possibility of ranking higher, than a site that has only 10 pages.

• Create A Site Map: The major search engines like, Google, Yahoo have their standards for website rankings. An XML site map enables your visitors and search engines to navigate your website via text links…text links are great spider food!

• Use More Text Than Images: To display all the essential names, content, or links use more text than images. Search Engines do not recognize text contained in images or flash content. If there is a need to use images, then always use the Alt tag to describe the link, it is a waste of assets to leave any ALT tags empty.

• Monitor Keywords On a Regular Basis: There are several ways to research for products and services on the internet, people think in different ways and search in different ways search patterns vary frequently.

• Submit Site To Directories: Careful planning and approach to this one, directory submissions are great for link juice (Google PR value) there are many directories out there which welcome link exchanges (low score within the Google algorithm) and one way links (high score within the Google algorithm).  Avoid visible link purchase directories, these attract penalties from Google and are widely viewed as damaging to positioning within SERPS.
